Norske Skog joins UN Global Compact

To strengthen our commitment to green growth and sustainable business practices, Norske Skog has joined the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative. At Norske Skog, we believe that industry must participate actively to progress according to the principles outlined by the UN Global Compact on human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.

As a major industrial group, Norske Skog is heavily invested in the process to control climate change. Together with other international companies, Norske Skog has made a commitment to ensuring that industry contributes to the process of establishing a global, long-term, market-based emissions reduction framework in place.

To build on our commitment, Norske Skog has joined UN Global Compact to support its mission of mobilizing a global movement of sustainable companies and stakeholders to create a better world.

“At Norske Skog, we create green value through innovation and leadership. To make truly meaningful impact, we need to work together with stakeholders to improve sustainability across our entire value chain. Working in partnerships with others leads to greater impact, which is why we are very excited to join the world’s largest knowledge network on corporate sustainability and continue to make progress on the UN Sustainable Development Goals,” says Mari Mogen, Head of Sustainability at Norske Skog.

The lifecycle of our products provides unique opportunities to curb climate change. Our main raw material, wood, is a renewable resource. Sustainably managed forests act as carbon sinks as they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere and store its carbon in the wood. This carbon is further stored in our products that can be recycled multiple times and used to generate bioenergy by the end of their lifecycles.

Global movement of responsible and sustainable companies

When the late UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan launched the UN Global Compact in 2000, the aim was to create a global movement of responsible and sustainable companies that would shape the corporate future. The number of member companies partaking in the initiative is rapidly growing, currently counting more than 12,300 companies in 160 countries.
